The story about to unfold, and Pickle’s inaugural adventure, is written like a diary, of emails and texts exchanged between Jill and Terry, as Jill embarked on her journey of the Camino de Santiago, a 780 km pilgrimage across the North of Spain May 27, 2017.
We hope you enjoy this Epic Adventure… from the comfort of your easy chair.
May 27, 2017:
As I prepare myself now for the fine details of my departure, I thought it best to let you know that after discussion with my forever travel partner Terry about some of my fears about going without her, she has gifted me the next best thing to her presence…her friend and comrade of over 30 years…Mr Super Pickle (SP on his cape)…or Pickle to me. We have bonded already!! Pickle will be travelling the Camino with me, at the ready should I need advice, if I’m scared, or lonely for her, and for all of you. Pickle’s little arms clip right to the pack, and I’ve no doubt he is up to the epic journey ahead. We will be reporting together in the coming weeks. – Jill

Pickle crashing in bed, adjusting to the time zone
May 29, 2017:
I’m at the Accent Inn now resting up, and Pickle I think is drawing a bath! We wish you were here too Terry. I really can’t leave him alone for a minute!!! – Jill
OMG…still laughing I am afraid to ask what Mr Pickle is doing to the Accent Ducky. Looking back, it makes me nervous he might get you into trouble, and you haven’t even left yet! I think you would have been better off with me by the looks of things. – Terry
Ahhhh, a good bath and off to bed!
May 30, 2017:
Pickle produced his documents…no problems! We are now in Dallas awaiting our flight to Madrid , we watched Lion on the flight…I cried, Pickle was stoic. You are more fun…we would have had wine – J & P
Pickle with his Travel Documents – May 30th, 2017
Pickle in his Travel Capsule
LOL!! That crazy cucumber! Where did you spend the first night? Did you walk to the ferry? – Terry
Hi my Terry-girl…Yep, I walked to the ferry! We made it safe and sound here in Biarritz France, no problems at all. Beautiful little French town. Clean, warm, and lots of flowers in bloom. The hostel is perfect, 6 women to a room, breakfast included…24 euro. I have not broken it to Pickle yet that it’s all women. Hope he’s not going to turn into a peeping pickle!! Foraged for my supper… amazing baguette, and now of course when it’s nite, I am wide awake as the time is back to front. I am so glad tho, I stayed here the nite and tomorrow’s journey is train to the historic start line of St Jean Pied de Port! And stay the nite there, just approaching it easy. Pickle is so exhausted he has not come out of his travel capsule aka my water bottle. Jet lag has hit him hard! If he sleeps tomorrow nite in St Jean I think he will be ready to go! Take care Terry… soon we walk! – Jill
Nice to hear from you two! Biarritz sounds beautiful. Awake at nite seems to be your norm, and yes, the older we get, the harder it is to adjust to the time zone. I should have given you a few sleeping pills, although I know you would not take them unless absolutely necessary. Maybe try nice warm milk and hot bath or shower. I bet you are excited to start this walk! Is the train ride long? Make sure you don’t go to sleep on the train and miss getting off at the right stop! Good for you for taking another night to catch your breath, I think you will enjoy the walk much more not exhausted from the beginning. How funny Pickle is still in his travel capsule. Hopefully you don’t forget him and start to fill the bottle, because I’m not sure he can swim! Buen Camino. – Terry-girl
Train ride is 2 1/2 hours. We did get some sleep and Pickle is rarin’!! Breakfast now and off to the train!! – J & P
June 1:
Finally I got a bit of internet that is working!! I will upload photos tomorrow. The Pyrenees climb looks brutal, I don’t mind saying. It looks so high!! And so…we’re off!!
Pickle and I got caught in a rain squall, and we got into a tangle with our poncho which made poor Sue’s incident in Ireland look tame. The Koreans came to rescue us.
Pyrenees Climb
Helpful friends
Jill & Pickle resting for lunch
I literally could not find my way out!! Anyway, Pickle was nervous, but I got him calmed down and then the rain blew off and we could have a lovely lunch together in the Pyrenees mountains. Pickle did not bring his lunch so we shared, he also does not take turns with the pack…or walk at all for that matter!!! He does have such a sunny personality tho, that all is always forgotten!
We made it to Roncevaux but it was brutal. And to top it off in our dorm…snorers!!! Pickle and I slapped on those ear plugs! We got the top bunk…who knew Pickle was afraid of the top bunk! He only wants the bottom bunk but to no avail. He had to hang on tight, and then said he got barely any sleep as a result. He was afraid of rolling out of bed and becoming chutney on the floor! Good god! That’s all I need!! Anyway, we are making new friends and really thoroughly enjoying ourselves. More to come. – Jill & Pickle…sending our love.
Looks like he will not take up too much room, and won’t kick off the covers…Terry
AND… won’t want the window open… like my other travel mate… I won’t name names! Lol! We are in bed #210 Pickle is ever so happy. – Jill

Pickle warming up with a cup of joe

June 3:
Hi again! Just getting you caught up on us. Today was another long and not easy walk. We did manage to stop for a beverage along the way to warm us and we had a pretty wet and rainy day.
Walking with Rosa from Brazil. And Shweta from India, they did help us with our poncho this morning, and were overall great company!
We will have an easy walk tomorrow to Pamplona. Oh, and you guessed it…another top bunk for Pickle! I really did not think I would hear the end of it…until he got in the shower and it was COLD. He obviously is not a Pickle who has spent much time in the fridge!! You could hear him complaining all over the Alburgue. Anyway, he’s a bit of a sour Pickle at the moment so I tucked him in the sleeping bag to keep warm. Early nite…tomorrow we walk!! – Jill
Sounds like the Camino is quite taxing, but seems to me you mentioned the first bit was. Hopefully the feet are holding out. The two girls look like they would be good company did they come together, or did the 3 of you find each other? I did have a laugh, and could picture the poncho incident from our trip to Ireland….worse than Sue’s…how could that be possible??? Sounds like Mr Pickle is a bit of a baby, certainly not a “Jill Pickle” – Terry
June 4…Us girls have all come alone, and just found each other! And Terry, day 3 was all over the map for me and poor Pickle. It started off with me having a case of the diarrhea on the trail! Not sure what that was about but poor Pickle had to help me in the bush which he didn’t like very much at all. A fellow pilgrim had administered me Imodium, and well, one for Pickle too, as he got nervous he might get an attack. By lunch our tummies had settled and then the worst happened Terry!! I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich and when it came it had a sliced pickle in it!! Pickle was so traumatized he fainted dead away!

He suffered some trust issues with me after that as you can imagine! I had to pinky swear that would NEVER be my intention for him…no matter how hungry I got! We then journeyed on to Pamplona, and went to Sunday mass. We lit candles, and I don’t mind saying…Pickle prayed in earnest for his safety…and yours too.

We listened to the choir and all faith was restored. We have arrived at our Alburgue tired but in one piece, and a turbulent day ends for poor Pickle. We are both feeling fine now…Jill

June 5…Hi Terry-girl! Well, the rain has stopped and we had a brutal day out here in the sun! We climbed to the summit of Alta del Perdon (mountain of forgiveness) and this is where the pilgrims could receive forgiveness for their sins and be blessed in the event of death if they did not reach Santiago, and so I happened to have a stone to place at the summit, which I gave to Pickle to have the honours. He was happy to do so as you can see.

We then carried on and wandered to our final destination today, but not before detouring about 1 1/2 k to an old monastery. As you can see Pickle was NOT impressed! He was pooped!!

Anyway, we are nestled in now, had our dinner, and yes, you guessed it – Pickle is snoring!! Nite nite Terry-girl. More adventures to come. Love J & P
Forgiveness, that’s a nice one and when people don’t forgive they are missing out many things in many ways. Carry on & enjoy!…Terry
Yes, forgiveness feels clean and freeing hey, no matter what. Pickle forgave me for that ham and cheese and pickle sandwich the other day too! Pickle and I are having the time of our lives…truly! Thanks for letting him come along…he sticks close to me as you well know, and I am always running to catch the rest of the group due to my photo taking, but Pickle doesn’t mind, in fact he is taking off with me! Please keep well – we miss you!! Love Jill & Pickle
June 6…I am in a municipal Alburgue just going to sleep and the young people outside are singing and playing guitar…IMAGINE, by John Lennon…this is an emotional day…Jill

OMG, I am sure this was a very emotional day, but we knew it was going to happen…hopefully Mr. Pickle rocked you to sleep…Love Terry “REMEMBER THESE MOMENTS”
June 7 Hi Terry-girl. Well, here we are, arrived in Los Arcos after a long and very hot trek! Not sure if it is on your map. I have a different one we are walking off of. We are heading for Viana tomorrow. I say we, as it is Pickle, Krisztina and Hajnalka from Hungary, Penny from England, Rosa from Brazil, and me. All us girls came solo….cool hey!

We are getting on well and looking out for each other. I am 6 walking days in at roughly 20 – 25 k per day and so far no blistered feet or injuries except a sore back as I was carrying my pak wrong for the first 3 days. Even it felt better today once I actually put it on right. The Hungarian gals both have knee issues tho, so we are walking slower. Nothing wrong with that. There are some pretty horrific blistered feet showing up at the Alburgues tho Terry…I don’t know how people keep walking!! I don’t think I could do it. One week is separating the men from the boys when it comes to injuries, and any one of them can take you out. I am trying to be very careful to change my socks mid day and Vaseline up my feet! Pickle and me with our feet up after a long days walk…Pic’s fittin’ right in!! Jill

June 12 We’ll be in Belorado soon. Pickle’s having an off day it seems Terry-girl. He does not even want to walk at all today!

PS Last night we had a little too much wine at dinner, and when we got back to the monastery at bedtime we got into a laughing jag and had to be shushed by a little nun!! Too much drink in the house of the lord! I am going to hell!! Not looking good for me! Jill
OMG, too funny…at 60…being shushed! Terry
June 13 Hi Mom! Love from Pickle in the daypack, all the way from Spain!

Hi baby, brought a tear to my eye, you look like you and Jill are having the time of your lives…Mom. PS Having sisters over to watch The Way. Your making good time, your feet must be holding out. Terry
Yay!! We are into Burgos for 2 days rest tomorrow. Pic has been homesick for you, I gave him a little wine, now he’s crying…Jill
Lol!! You deserve to be comfortable, you waited and trained a long time for this. Tell Pickle I am crying too. I’m at work… they would frown at wine at my desk…unless I share. Terry
He is really a pickled Pickle! I think Pic’s been hit hard by the wine. He went upstairs and we have not seen him since. Sound familiar? Jill
Are you sure YOU didn’t have too much to drink?? Terry
No, I am a responsible leader. One glass, maybe two tops! He’s one Guzzlin’ Gerkin! I hope he doesn’t throw up! 36 beds in this god for shaken Alburgue, Pic’s already asleep….one drunk Dill! Jill
OMG, he is going to have a big head. 35 beds…sounds small from the others. Terry
June 13…Well, Pic surprised us all today (as the girls have fondly nicknamed him) by requesting we stop in at a Church and he went into confession of all things!! Did you know he had secrets on his heart?? Me neither…and guess what it was?? He said he hadn’t really wanted to come on the Camino, but he’s having such an amazing adventure he wanted to confess his evil thoughts towards us. Glad that’s over! Pic was in fine form for the rest of the day. More photos to come. J & P

June 15…Having a rest day and a down day here in Burgos. We will stay 2 nites. Pic is enjoying his leisure over a breakfast sandwich and cafe con Leche!

After laundry & supermarcado we are off to ride the city train, see the cathedral, and reunite with the Hungarian girls! Pickle is livin’ large!! Love J & P

Sounds like a perfect few days. Had sisters over last nite and watched The Way. Would you believe I enjoyed it more than the first time because I have been following you two! Sisters loved it and kleenexes all round. Ugly weather here today, which is too bad, as we have been having some sun for a change. Anyway, take care, enjoy the day and rest those feet! Hugs…Terry
June 17…Hi Terry-girl. Pic and me having a rest along the trail. Pickle is hydrating!

Good to keep hydrating. Long day? Terry
Not too bad. I am nearing Logrono on your map. Still strong for Canada…no blisters! I have arrived at a tiny church for the nite in San Nicolas…off the beaten path. It is so beautiful it takes my breath away. Only 12 beds and we are from all different countries.Jill

Sounds and looks like something from a fairy tale. This trip from this end exceeds what I was expecting. Hopefully for you too. Terry
Very much so Terry, for me too. Jill
Take it all in. Once in a lifetime experience. Terry
They washed and kissed our feet before dinner, and blessed us as pilgrims. Jill

Oh how sweet, tears in my eyes over that one. Terry
I cried too. It has been nothing short Terry-girl, just amazing! Jill
June 18. Wow, imagine if you had not made the decision to do this walk. It is truly life changing. Terry
It has been at times. I am just waking up for another days walk. A stranger I met briefly told me to come to 5 special places. SAN Nicolas church was one of them. There are 4 more and I will not miss them. Jill
It sounds unbelievable. Your making good time. Feet still holding out? Terry
It truly is. The people take this walk very seriously, and all the volunteers who help the walkers are astounding. I am averaging 25 k and I have 2 blisters now. I named them Bonnie & Clyde! I’m tending to them. Jill
Lol!! Hope they don’t hang around. Must be time for you to head out today. Have a good day! Terry
I am just leaving yes, bye for now Terry-girl. Jill
Looking at the map, Jill is about half way, good for her, yes everyone gets blisters, tell me about them, had many in my life hiking…one trip I literally had blood in my boots by the time I got back to the car, wow, not fun, I had to take time off work! Margriet (following along too)
June 18. Mark your map at Carrion de Los Condes…me and Pickle are here after a hearty breakfast…pass it on!! He really doesn’t like those potato torts but there isn’t anything else….Jill

Will do. Looks like Pickle is holding up…not surprising because you have been carrying him the whole way. I kinda thought he was putting on a brave face, how are you managing the food?…Terry
I’m eating a lot of bread and I’m pooping goat turds as a result but there’s nothing much I can do! Pic’s bound up too! Jill
OMG, tooo funny! Hopefully you can find something more to your liking every so often…Terry
I may have to eat Pickle after all!! Jill
OMG what is this walk turning you into?? So much for the spiritual awakening. Terry
I do try, God I try Terry-girl. Every man for himself where vegetables are concerned. Lol!! No, I would never think of eating Pic. We might find a salad in this town, ever hopeful. There is too much bread here for me Terry-girl, but I need the carbs quite frankly. Seeds and salads are not cutting it. I will try tonight to post a few pics. Wanted you all to know where we are. PS. Last night we all got a real good sleep tho. Not really any snorers but where we are now for the nite, there already is one!! Jill
June 19..There is La Fiesta SAN Bernice here all weekend but we will only stay for the festivities today, off again tomorrow. There have been parades and a fair and lots of street entertainment already so had to take it in. Jill

Probably not expecting things like this along the way, just gets better and better..Terry
No Terry, I didn’t at all. Just stumbled upon this festival in Logrono. Weathers good, crowds are interesting, and NOT walking is pleasant. Oh, and this street musician…playing John Lennon’s “Imagine”…. imagine that!! Jill

June 21…Hey my Terry-girl. Well here it is…I have to tell you…and I was trying to spare you…I contracted a particularly nasty and vicious attack of the bedbugs the other night!!! I fought back fast and hard and I’m pretty sure they’re gone, but poor Pickle has taken it hard. I assured him that none got on him, but because he is made of cloth, he would need to have a wee wee squirt of repellent. Well, as you can imagine, there were a few pickle juice tears, but we got the job done and he has taken to sleeping in my buff, and says he cannot possibly face the day. I told him, nothing to be ashamed of…any Pickle can contract cooties on a trip like this. Many bites later, I know I have been carrying this pak awhile, when all I can think of is…how much do they weigh!! Lol!! Anyway, I wanted you to know, and I hope you will still be my forever travel friend, and even sit next to me on the bus in Greece…I’m sure they will be gone by then. Itchy, but still very much alive and in it for the Canadians. My spirits remain high! Please say a huge hello to the rest of the 6 pak.. I love and miss you all. Jill-E-Bean

I see you’ve still got your sense of humor! Your JP will be disgusted with the thought of bedbugs!! Hang in there girl, you are on the home stretch….maybe not so much the home stretch but getting close. Hugs to Pickle, and tell him to suck it up, and if not, to start carrying some of the stuff! Much love & hugs Terry
June 21..I haven’t even told JP, it’s all too much for him! Yep, my sense of humour reigns supreme! Today I was walking alone on a stretch of path that had no shortage of mice…Good God!! Where was Pickle when, as we agreed, I was supposed to toss him forward when I was scared?? Asleep in the freakin’ buff!! I miss you! Jill
June 25…Hi Mom…me Pickle! Jill and me got a new walking stick for the mountains coming up!! This is Sandy from Florida…she fell 🙁 Jill takes care of me so I don’t fall…and become chutney…Pic

Good morning my Pickle! Wow you hav made good time! You are really getting close to the end. Looks like 2 more days to the Iron Cross. Thanks for the pictures, and it looks like Jill is taking very good care of you..Terry
Yep, I haven’t fallen off of or out of anything at all!! Pic
Good Boy!…Terry
Iron Cross day after tomorrow, Astorga on the map Terry…Jill
Iron Cross will be quite emotional for sure. Let me know when you get there and we can have a moment with each other. Terry
Yep, I will not walk too far past the Cross tomorrow, I think. The 4th mystery stop is at the Cross and I am staying there nite before. I’m very emotional, for sure, and I really need to be mindful now. Anything can happen. We still see injuries every day that take people out. I’m a blathering mess for the Cross already. Jill
All of this is why people made this walk for hundreds of years. I am so happy for you that you have done this. Terry
I agree Terry. Can you imagine, it has been roughly 1000 years this has been going on. Really symbolizes all that meant so much to me…well and truly a chapter closed…and here is what I will leave also. Jill

I can’t imagine. The world is an amazing place, so many more places to experience. Much love to you two, and thank you for sharing this incredible journey with me. Thank you xoxo Terry
It has been a pleasure Terry-girl, and I have missed you on so many occasions. Not the same with anyone else. Jill
lol! Glad to hear that. Hold Pickle tight, and it will be like I am right by your side..Terry
I know…Pickle has done his best, he really has. He’s been a feisty little Dill and a good sport! Jill
You got that rite. I knew he would be up for the challenge. Look at us in our 60’s and laughing about a silly Pickle. Terry
I’m not going to tell him you said that! Chip off his Mom’s old block if you ask me! And he can give me a pretty cold shoulder…like fresh from the jar! Jill
OMG…he would never let me forget that! I can’t top that one! You guys sooo have this! Terry
OK, well we will keep putting one foot in front of the other and be optimistic we got this! Jill
June 25…This is Rachel. She is 20, from Detroit, and has been walking with us too. She is an incredible lady. Pickle really likes her. Pic’s pretty social, like his Mom….everyone likes him. Jill

June 27: Last night Pickle and I slept at the 4th mystery spot given us by that stranger in Burgos…and it turned out to be Alburgue “Hospital for the Heart” Pickle and I lost it! Can you imagine…day before the Cross. It was in Foncebaden. I will post photos. Jill
Oh my goodness, all of this is really something. Planets were aligned for you to meet this stranger, that’s for sure. Terry
Hi Terry-girl, sorry I missed your call. Pickle and I have been to the Iron Cross and my friend, there is so much loss there. I talked it over with Pickle and I hope you can forgive me, I know you and I talked about leaving him there, but I just could not leave him. We hope you can understand, it was intense, so we decided to comfort one another, and ask you if it’s OK if we just finish this one out together hey. Jill

Everyone here has been hoping the two of you would finish together and yes, I am happy to know you two are a team and will stay together to the end. I’m having a little moment right now! Terry
Me too! With your blessing…there’s nothing that can stop Pickle and I!! Jill
You two rest up, your on the home stretch now, and I never doubted it for a minute. Where do you stay the night? Terry
I walked with just Pickle from the Cross to Ponferrada…past Molinaseca on your map. Tomorrow I will be in VillaFranca del Bierzo. Yes, it was quite something, 26k walk me & Pickle clocked alone today. We are in SAN Nicolas church Alburgue for the night. It’s girls on one side…boys on the other…Pickle’s laying low with me. Jill
Lol!! Look at you two! The story continues. Nite nite and pleasant dreams! Terry
She did the right thing! Pickle has been a part of her on this trip…I think she needs him in order to be able to finish…6 pak Julia
It wouldn’t be the same if she crossed the finish line without him. Funny how attached I have gotten for the silly little thing in the past few weeks, and I have had him for over 30 years. Terry
I am so happy for Pickle, Jill and you Terry! I cannot wait to see him when he comes home. I bought some new pickles, hot & sweet – TANGY!! 6 pak Sue
June 27..Our dogs are up…man, we’re beat! But our hearts are lighter knowing all is exactly as it should be. Ok…Pickle and I over and out for a snooze! Zzz Jill
Well, it looks like someone had a good sleep!!! I wake up to go out to the kitchen and what do I see, Pickle swinging from the rosary! He said he was so happy he was getting to continue on he couldn’t help himself…I forgave him. He is such a mischievous little Dill, knowing he is now going to Santiago! He’ll be hanging from the incense burners next! Jill

We all forgive him. He has such a following back here I was getting calls yesterday and emails wondering if he was carrying on the walk with you or staying at the Iron Cross. Oh boy, the two of you. You could have an interesting last leg. Terry
Hmmm, funny you should say that. After walking alone the previous day, then meeting up with the rest of the gals this morning, Denise from Australia and I separated from the others, and decided to slow things down and get off the grid so to speak, and just have no destination each day, so that’s how we walked today, and we had an amazing day! Pickle is into it too. All just spontaneous and organic! Jill
Sounds exactly what you need. Terry
Exactly!! Punched a clock for 40 years. I’m just going to wing it from here. Jill
Is that the young girl who’s feet were killing her because of new shoes? Terry
No, Denise is from Australia, she’s about 47, tough as nails and we get on like a house on fire. Plus, Pic adores her! She does have horrific blisters tho Jill

Oh poor thing. Sounds like the perfect walking companion. Terry
June28: Yes, I find I just need to do my own thing now. Denise is wonderfully easy going. Today we were walking thru a little village, and an old man in a car stopped rite in the middle of the road and hugged us both and wished us Buen Camino! Does not happen if you rush. We came upon a mother and daughter singing and dancing in the small square and we jumped rite in dancing too…in full rain gear! Can’t happen if your rushing along! Jill
Perfect! I was wondering if you are getting any rain or if you were baking the whole time Terry
We met a cyclist from Germany doing his Camino by bicycle…in 7 days!! Jill
You are probably enjoying the change of weather Holy cow! 7 days! The trouble with that is he doesn’t get anything from the walk. Terry
We have stopped baking now and last 2 days and probably tomorrow…rain. We get our ponchos on and motor away. Our ponchos protect us and it really isn’t cold, so we just plod along! Jill

June 29: Well Terry-girl, we are at the last of the 5 mystery Allergies, Albergue Leo in the town of Villafranca for the night. This one encompasses all of the best of all the 5, the feel is terrific, and we are blessed to be here. Since Pickle now realizes he is going to actually complete his Camino with me, he is embracing all things Camino…I think he wants his own shell and gourd!!! I’m not getting him anything too large, I’ll tell you that…I’ll only end up having to carry it for him! He has been really happy since the Cross, and embracing thoughts of new beginnings, and generally feeling much more free than any Dill who’s lived in a jar in the fridge I’ll say. He’s literally curious about everything now and not wanting to ride in the bag in fear as he once did. I have to watch him every minute…he’s like someone with a camera or something…one minute they’re there, the next their gone!! Not sure if you can relate! I told him….if your a problem Pickle, you’ll have to go on a string! Seriously tho, I don’t want to rain on his parade, he is now having so much fun just walking and being free. We are back up to 3 now…Rachel from Detroit has rejoined us, so we are Canada, America, and Australia, and of course Pickle jar!! Anyway, we will rest up now as we have had 2 long walking days, and theres a big hill coming. Jill
I am so glad Pickle has now settled down or at least not worrying about where his journey would end. I think he has now gone from a Gerkin Pickle to a Jill Pickle. Sounding like you more and more and enjoying all that the two of you are sharing. Take care, enjoy the last days of your journey, I feel it has really fulfilled your dreams and more. I know just following your photos and emails have for me…Terry
Pickle is starting to be a handful at times…I told him, watch it buddy or you might just become a mouthful!! No serious…Pickle and I walk on!! Love you all!! J & P
June 30: I am so proud of Jill & Pickle, just keep on pickling along and bring our 6 pak Jill home safe and sound – WE PROMISE A PARTY FOR YOU PICKLE!!….6 pak Sue
Pickle just better remember which side his bread is buttered on! “Way to go Pickle”…Julia
June 30: Hi Sue! Hi All!!! God I miss you all!! This sure is a trip of a lifetime and now Pickle and I are not parting…we will finish strong and do the 6 pak, and our Canada proud! Not sure if you have been following the adventures and misadventures of Pickle and me but we have sure had some times! Pickle’s getting a little feisty now seeing the finish line so I have to watch him closely. This morning there was a wee fire going in the common area as the weather is cooler. Pickle wanted to warm his little feet! I had to remind him…they are cloth Pic…and I’m not taking you forward without feet! Your mom would kill me! Anyway its ponchos for us today, rain in the forecast and with the winds of all of you at our backs we walk on brave and proud to our destination…Santiago. And as for a Pickle party…Im in!…Jill

Good to hear from you Jill. Thanks to Joan, I am following you along The Way…highlighting your steps on the map as you make your way West. Loving every minute of it. Best decision you ever made was to keep Pickle with you. Another Pickle thought for you: “Id rather be in a pickle, than in a jam”. Love you, can’t wait to see you…6 pak Julia
Thank you Julia…I just could not leave the little guy up there with all that loss, and by now he was really wanting to finish, and showing grit and determination seldom seen in a Dill. We hedged our bets that Terry would approve, as after all it was dawn, we couldn’t call her, so he came along. Well he’s been so excited since, and frankly, so have I, me and Pickle are gonna finish this thing together. AND…Guess what?? We are going over yet another mountain range tomorrow morning and we have been offered to do it by horseback!! At first Pickle was sour on the idea, (I notice he can flip from sweet to sour pretty easily…hmmm) but I reminded him of all the challenges he’s already accomplished and he can do this one too! So I’m just hunting for a tiny pair of cowboy boots for him, he can ride up on the horn, he’s got a pretty good gerkin grip so I think we’re good to go!! Every single day is something new presenting itself, so saddle up Pickle! We are having the time of our lives now, Im happier than I can ever remember. Pickle South rides at Dawn! Love you all! Jill & The Dill

As you can see, Pickle has quite a following back home. I only really started to share his stories with the group when he had pickle tears from the bed bug incident. We all laughed so hard at that I carried forward some of his e mails. I can tell you leading up to the Iron Cross we were all holding our breath to see if he was going to stay behind or not. I bet you could hear the cheers when you e mailed he stayed with you and I can also share there were a few happy tears too! Amazing how we are all so into this journey with you two. Again thanks for sharing it with us. Your trip on horseback sounds absolutely amazing and what a way to end this trip! I can tell you Pickle is braver than me as I am afraid of horses…I rather jump off a bridge or out a plane (of which I have done both). Hang on tight and enjoy!! Terry
June 30: Pickle earns his Compostel pin! YAY Pickle!!
July 1: How perfect and proudly wearing a Canadian pin on our 150th birthday. You are on the countdown now. 7 days by my account. Pleasant dreams…Terry
Oh ya!…he’s in the game! 7 days, I can barely believe it! We rode over the mountain this morning. I had a little trouble convincing Pickle that he should take the ride as he was quite nervous initially. I finally had to agree to let him steer of all things..what the heck…being driven by a Dill? But it was the only way he would go. So he gripped the reins for dear life and over that mountain we went like nobody’s business. I worried one of the other horses might see him and try to nibble him off so we stayed back some for Pic’s safety. Also..no helmet! Anyway, all went well…tell Julia she would have loved it. We were free and happy and now we are over and out. Jill & The Dill. And just to clarify, it is only a 2 hour ride up 10k. Then we’re dumped off to bloody well keep walking! Jilly
Pickle’s exhausted! Jill

Yes, exhausted but still smiling!! That’s my little Gerkin! Terry
July 2: Hi Terry-girl: Well we have reached the city of Sarria today and it is 119k from our destination Santiago. It is from this city also that pilgrims may join in the Way, walk the 119k and receive their Compostela certificate at the end. And lo and behold, what do we hear from Pickle? None less than he would like to actually walk it in on his own juice so to speak, and get his own little credentials! Well, we talked it over and we think he can do it Terry…he’s a changed Dill, he’s in the game, in it to win it…he’s fired up! Soooo, because I want to see the little cuke succeed I went out shopping, and well as you see, he now as his own little hikers!! Im a bit worried about blisters… who wants to break in new shoes at this stage of the game, but theres no other way for him to clock in the k’s. Hope your OK with this Mom, I know its a big step for him – he’s going to have to face the elements and fight for that credential but we will have his back and hope he can do you proud! Jill & Dill…bring ‘er in!!

First of all….how in the world did you find his boots…the two of you and your stories are so funny and emotional at the same time. We are enjoying them more than you realize! You must be tasting the finish line at this point. Hope Pic gets his stamps, pretty amazing accomplishment for the little guy. Rock on Canada! Terry
The Camino provides!! We are in bed early so we can get out before he gets too hot! I don’t relish the thought of chutney on the trail!! He has his passbook now and must get 2 stamps per day to prove his walk! a big HELL YES PICKLE! J & P Team Canada!

Good god I am having a moment just looking at his passport!! Who knew we could all get so caught up in this story. Get to bed early you two…you head out at dawn! Love Terry

I am so proud of Pickle. He is definitely not a Gerkin who is jerkin and ferkin around. Go all the way Pickle! And at the end, you can thank Jill for all the help and support and say “IT’S BEEN A SLICE JILL”. Yay JILL!! You are making such good time it looks like you’ll make it to the Atlantic! I hope so. Julia
I cannot tell you how much I am loving the adventures of Jill & Pickle….Sue
July 3: Hey Terry-girl. Just wanted to report the Dill did an amazing job of his first day walking. He kept up, had no issues, and his little feet are soaking in a bit of vinegar just now to keep them soft, at the end of the day. He likes a coffee straight up in the morning too…no milk for our Pickle, when he’s firing up for the walk. We are just outside Portomarin for your map. We’re off for supper…the Dill is NOT vegetarian…enough said! J & P on the road

July 4. OMG, these two are having a great time. Ive enjoyed the trip, the pictures. Very spiritual affair. 6 pak Joan
Fabulous pictures! Have any of you read The Hat that went around the world by Richard Hill from Yellow Point Lodge? I read it to my class and they were mesmerized by the Hat and how he became so real – just like Mr. Pickle! At the airport in Vancouver Pickle had a dream to walk the Camino with Auntie Jill and see it all. So now it has come and he is on his way even with new hikers! And soon they will FINISH the wonderful adventure. And Mr. Pickle will say I am so glad to be home and I will stay here until I am on the road again to Greece! 6 pak Sue
Love love the pictures! I agree you are on the countdown and it will be here in no time. Looks like the Gerkin of Glee has found his stride. Sue Haslam called me last night for further updates, she is totally caught up in this and so is Henry and Geff not to mention all the others. So carry on! Terry
Hi Terry-girl: Well another day under our belts and we are in fine form! We stopped for the night just before Palas de Rei because there were large groups of school kids and lots of families joining in the Way from Sarria. We are in a tiny town, but the Dill is not complaining…he’s beat! Now that he’s up early and walking, he wants to see every sight there is to see, so of course I can’t disappoint! I’ve even nicknamed him…..the Pickle of Pleasure, the Dill of Delight! Just look at him having the adventure of his life! Well the poor little Cuke is plumb tuckered after a full days walking and sightseeing, so while we are sipping a sangria, Dill has his shower and gets his dogs up! The countdown is on…there is excitement all round. Dill’s not relishing the end! Chow for now. Your happy wanders! J & P
July 5: The Dill has decided to visit with extended family along the Way. We will never make it to Santiago!! For God sake!! We can’t get him off!!! The Cuke’s runnin’ the show! Jill

My God Jill, the Cuke really does seem to be runnin’ the show. Thank God the Iron Cross was 3/4 of the way into the trip or he would have added another week to this trip or even more if this had started earlier. Obviously the excitement is building for him, how about you? You are so close now. How far have you made it and where to you hope to sleep tonight? I have you heading to Palas de Rei not sure if you made it there yet. Steady as you go my friend, almost there! Much love to you both!! Terry
Hi my friend! I can’t put into words how it feels today as we close in on our goal of Santiago. I just have no words at this time. We have walked so far, this walk has been in my mind for what…5 years? I am so emotional at this time. We expect to complete Saturday morning. I am in Medlide for the night, past Palas de Rei but not yet Arzua. I am near to done…I’m sometimes overwhelmed now as I’m walking. Hard to believe all those kilometres are behind me. 2 full days left only. If it wasn’t for Pickle making me laugh I sure would cry a lot right now. Well I do anyway. Been a great ride. Hugs and all my love. Jill
Good Evening my Forever Travel Partner! I too have found this journey you are taking quite emotional so I can’t imagine what you are feeling, both physically and emotionally. You are wise to avoid the bigger cities due to the crowds and likely are finding these much more charming. Is it just you and Pickle walking now or do you plan on making the last leg with others? Don’t worry about crying a lot I can assure you I have done my fair share too! Happy that Pickle has given you some laughs along the Way. Take care, get some rest, you are almost there. Love & Hugs. Terry
As of today, it would seem it may be me, Dill, and Denise from Australia walking it in, as all the others surged ahead. I have 20 k tomorrow, Friday, and then 10k to arrive Saturday lunch is how it feels to me. Denise has a 2 nite stay in a pension in Santiago and she has kindly offered to share it with me just round from the Cathedral, the finish of this long and taxing walk. So many times, it asked everything of me I had…just like life. But Im still going and it is in my cross sights now Terry – Im hungry for the win!! It has been an unbelievable journey. Stay tuned for the finish line. Ive been so glad your with me. It was way more daunting at times than I ever thought possible. I am in Buente for the night. Im bushed!! Riding the adrenaline to the end now tho. Say hi to all for me, and thank you for being out there. Hugs Jill
Imagine! Its unbelievable to be that close to the finish line. Jill, I applaud your tenacity, determination and strength. I toast you! You will never be the same after this amazing experience. 6 pak Joan
Hi Joan! It has been THE most incredible journey of my life, and yes, I left lots on this trail, and picked up some too as I walked with myself..well, and Dill, all these kilometres. It was so worth it, to an easier time now, and a gentler retirement life. I think this walk finally knocked the fight out of me. The most beautiful experience I have had with folks from all around the world, getting along, walking together peacefully…many stories to share. Well, in a few short days, I will have completed the incredible journey, thanks for coming with me. Hope I see you all soon. Jill
I am so impressed with this adventure and Henry and Geff have been following Jill & Dill every step! We are cheering you all the way and you are making us Canucks proud. Go go to the end! What a celebration we will have! LOVE & HUGS. 6 pak Sue
July 6: Good morning Terry-girl! Here you have it…our little Gerkin of God! The Sisters were delighted to meet him! He has his moms personality…everyone loves the Dill. Our spirits remain high! Jill

Pretty cool that the nuns were getting into the act! Did they bless the two of you? Such an emotional time for you I am sure. We watched yet again “The Way” for the 3rd time. (Doug’s idea as he is really caught up in this too). The most moving part of the movie for me was at the end when they entered the Cathedral and the one pilgrim got on his knees and approached the statue as it had been done thousands of years and then the thurible. The metal censer suspended from chains, in which incense was burned during worship services. I hope you get to see that. Terry
I’m 28k from Santiago Terry. We will walk 20 k tomorrow then sleep the night and fresh Saturday morning we will complete is how it feels. I have walked such a great distance with Denise of Australia, we want to go it together. Well of course the Dill is walkin’ it in too! I cannot even imagine entering Terry. This was such a very long walk. Today at the wall of wisdom I wrote “Imagine all the people living life in Peace”.

I didn’t walk 2 k down the road and the lines of that song started appearing on the garbage cans!! One line at a time, walk further, the next line, and so on…I photographed it all, I’m speechless! And anticipating…I too will watch The Way when I get home. God oh God…this Camino grips me to the end for sure! Humbled… Jill

And I bet till the end of time. Terry
I agree, what an incredible road. I just shake my head at the mystery of it all. Jill
July 7: Well Terry-girl. The Dill has a big personality here on the trail too! It seems everyone wants their photo with him!…an entire family from Denmark!

Not a lot I can do except let the little Cuke have his day in the sun. He is so happy and excited to be walking and meeting so many people…I mean even the nuns loved him. What can I say! We are heading for a big day tomorrow…he’s stoked and can barely sleep! You and I can’t hold the life of the Dill back. He’s busting out his Camino and livin’ every minute of it so no worries Terry…can’t harness the wind! Love and Hugs… Jill with celebrity Dill!
How do I get to be part of the Cuke Fan Club? I will go to any measure. Maybe the 6 Pak will adopt him as our mascot! 6 pak Sue
Pickle and I said we wanted to dance just once on the trail before we were done…and so we did!! Classical Jill & Dill

Not fair, starting the day with a cry. What a special woman. 6 pak Joan
So lively and very touching. 6 pak Margriet.
Thanks Terry! Glad you liked the dance. Of course I have invited Denise to our Canada and she would be delighted to meet you…Pic’s Mom! We are currently at an Albergue just 5k out of Santiago as we are beat, sweaty and dirty and want to have a fresh start and a new day tomorrow. I had an amazing finish today, coming across an old building with a note written on it. I will forward you this one photo I took of it…says it all.

Tomorrow is a big day. With heads held high we will finish proud…Pickle and I for Canada!! Enjoy your weekend my friend. Talk soon! Jill & The Dill do Santiago!
Your fan club expands even on the trail. Terry
FRIENDS…OH, THE PLACES WE’VE BEEN. July 7: To Jill, my Forever Travel Partner, and our little Pickle: Doug and I are going out this weekend, so I am sending this to you two a little early as the internet might be sketchy: By the time I get up Saturday morning you will have already reached where the Apostle Saint James the Great was said to be laid to rest. I can’t imagine what you will be feeling at the Cathedral, overwhelmed I am sure. You have now joined all those pilgrims of the past, present, and future. This was your destiny, that you now have completed. It is time for letting go of an amazing journey, which has now come to an end. You will move on to your next life’s experiences. You have lovingly carried Pickle with you to feel my presence and with your e mails, I felt I was right along side of you the whole way. I look forward to all the stories on your return. Thank you for sharing this with me. Love always, Terry-girl.

July 8: WE MADE IT MY FRIEND! And….just as I am to set foot in the cathedral square…some 780k later, this street musician begins to play, you guessed it! John Lennon’s “Imagine”…. I was floored!! Jill

UNBELIEVABLE! CONGRATS!! Love you my friend. Now take your needed down time with your friend, no need to rush off anywhere as your flight doesn’t leave till the 18th. Terry
Thank you…love you too. Jill
O, I really hope you get to see the pendulum incense swing from great heights over the pews. If you do, bring lots of Kleenex! I will pray you get to see it. Terry
I know hey! We will go to the Pilgrims Mass at 7:30 tonight. They seem to randomly do it now, so I will go to the Pilgrims tonight and the English Mass at 9:00 tomorrow morning, then a free day! J
Just received your last 3 photos. Those boots were made for walking. Congratulations Jill! What a trip. 6 pak Julia
Thank you all. Your support and belief in me meant everything to me and why I was able to complete this epic journey. I am going to Finnesterra and then to Muxia for a little retreat before coming home. I fly home on the 18th and it will be so great to see you all. Thank you so much for coming with me. Your friendship is a gift to me. Denise and I have booked 1 nite at the lighthouse located at the end of the world. Finesterra. Due to time constraint, we will take the bus. We are going to spend the nite there. I want to see the sunrise and sunset. We will walk to Muxia which is also a spiritual pilgrimage from Finnesterra and spend 2 nites at a retreat place set up for reflection from the walk. It is on the coast too. Jill
Perfect ending, like licking your fingers after a delicious meal. I hear Muxia is beautiful. Terry
I agree, we are trying to have it all. Jill
I think you will by the time you’re ready to come home. Terry
July 9: Hi my Terry. We saw the swinging of the incense urn at the noon mass!! It was incredible!! Heading for Finnesterra tomorrow a.m. Jill

I am sure it was incredible! Could you get pictures? Terry
Well guess what?? I was able, it was way cool! I got a few but technically we were not allowed. I’ll send you my best, but they’re not great. I will be back in Santiago 16th & 17th, I’ll try and see it again. Denise leaves for Australia on the 13th and Rachel for Detroit on the 14th. Last days just me so I’ll go again. Also, just watching the pilgrims finish in the square is so very cool. I got a hotel room single for 23 euro which includes breakfast right at the chapel so I just thought Id stay. Jill
Like we did in Russia, sneaking a few photos of the Amber room. Sounds very relaxing and will be nice to see people finish. Im sure there could be some moving shots. Terry
Yes, and I’ll be by myself so I can just sit and photograph it as I feel like. Jill
July 9: Terry, with your permission, the Dill and I will finish out the trip, reporting as we go. Off to the end of the world! J & D
July 10: Hi Terry-girl…hi all! Well just thought I would send a little update since our epic finish. The Dill was a little down for a day or 2 as he could not actually get his certificate. The Official sniffed out a fictitious passport number and he was not eligible even tho he had all his stamps.

I guess passport “Go Pick” was a dead give away! Well he’s rallied now since we had a short bus ride to Finnesterra and a beautiful nites sleep in an amazing bed at the lighthouse. This is the end of the world legend has it, so we celebrated by having a picnic on the rocks…olives…not dills, and watched the sunset, and the sunrise.

He’s a happier little Gerkin now as we rise and walk on to Muxia this morning. He even made a new friend this morning…from Taiwan. So we walk. Hope all’s well with you

July 11: Wow, what an ending to this epic journey. Margriet
July 13: Well my Terry-girl. It was a bit of a teary day for our little Dill today I must say. His beloved BFF Denis from Australia had to go home and I could barely extract the Gerkin from her, they have become that tight! Anyway, we are still in Muxia, she has gone to Santiago and will fly away tomorrow morning. Pickle is completely off his food tonight, he doesn’t want to go out of the Albergue, and has made me promise to beg you to let him accept Denise’s invitation to visit her on the Gold Coast for god sake!! I haven’t even been there! I have assured him I would do my best to get a yes out of you, just so he wouldn’t turn completely sour on me, and stop crying so at least one of us can get some sleep! We have a big day ahead tomorrow, we are bussing back to Santiago, yes bussing, not walking. The Dill refuses to take another step since he was robbed of his certificate, so I need my sleep. Anyway think it over, we could always mail him over for a visit…since I’m noticing you or I weren’t invited! I am still feeling well, mind, body and spirit. So much reflecting going on and joy at every little thing there is to see. Other than this day, Pickle has bee stellar company. I can be more sympathetic and help the little Cuke thru this emotional time. Hope you are doing good and it won’t be long now and we will be home again home again riggy jig jig! Love from Jill and a teary eyed Dill
Hi there. Absolutely Pic can go visit Denise…like you said, I was hoping for an invite myself. Maybe this will make him feel better. It is always hard to say goodbyes, especially when you have gone through something like this but oh what memories you take with you, that you can share with Denise. Something that time will not erase. I suspect. You might be a little low too, but try and get some sleep and rest up for the last few days. Hugs to you both. Terry
We could have the Dill tell Denise he’s not allowed to go without us…see what happens there. I swear she liked him more than she liked me in the end! Jill
July 17: Hi my Terry-girl. Just wanted to let you know firstly the Dill and I are alive and well!! We have been back to Santiago 4 days and feel we have explored every inch of this place. We have taken photos and wandered to our hearts content. Don’t know when I have felt this free. Rachel from Detroit went home 3 days ago, and while the Dill misses her, he is plum pooped out! We are packing and will leave for the airport 6:00 am. for a 9:00 a.m. to Madrid, then London, then Vancouver….a loooong day, and still get home on the 18th! Your Dill is so happy and grateful for this trip Terry, but confessed to me over an ice cream just moments ago, he is homesick for you, and there is simply no place like home. Until soon now! Love The Dill &.Jill
Well Jill & Dill, you are on the move…and will be back to familiar ground in no time. I am sure the two of you will want to just decompress for a few days so when you come up for air give me a shout. I speak not only for myself but the Pickle & Jill followers, how much we enjoyed your trip!! Hugs xoxo Terry
Hugs Terry….next stop, Madrid! J & D
THATS A WRAP!!!
